About Society Hill
Wikipedia describes Society Hill as one of Philadelphia’s oldest residential neighborhoods, settled in the early 1680s, with many historic buildings restored after an urban renewal program that began in the 1950s.
Chimney questions that come up here
For a house on the Philadelphia Register, the Historical Commission reviews “roofing and flashing,” mechanical vents and masonry pointing and repair. Review is free and part of the building permit, and the City says staff approve over 90% of applications without referral to the full Commission.
What a contractor will usually check
- What the chimney serves (furnace, boiler, water heater or fireplace) and whether each appliance has a proper flue
- Liner condition, usually with a camera during a Level II inspection
- Crown, cap and flashing, where most chimney leaks start
- Mortar and brick on the stack above the roof
See typical prices in the cost guide and the permit rules in the rules guide.
